Movies and MySpace: The Effectiveness of Official Web Sites versus Online Promotional Contests

Abstract

Few studies have examined the effects of Internet promotions within social networking sites. This study uses a comparison of online survey results from an official movie site and a movie contest promotion within a MySpace site to examine the effectiveness of the two online promotional tactics. Results indicate that overall the official Web site was more effective than the MySpace promotional page at increasing intent to see the movie. However, on the basis of the findings, the authors believe the most effective campaign would use both an official Web site and a social networking site. This study suggests additional research to explore the effectiveness of advertising messages on social network platforms and understand how users interact and respond to messages within these social communities.

Survey of Advertising Professionals

The growing usage of social media indicates a potentially effective new platform for advertisers. However, little research examines the use of social media for marketing and communications.

The purpose of this survey was to provide a descriptive analysis of current commercial social media usage by surveying advertising professionals within the Louisiana American Advertising Federation.

The online survey measured personal and professional social media usage, professional reasons for usage, and attitudes toward social media usage for advertising. I have provided a slide show detailing the results of my research.

How to Research on Facebook

Just finished a great article about conducting market research on Facebook:

Casteleyn, J., Mottart, A. and Rutten, K. (2009). How to use Facebook in your market research. International Journal of Market Research, 51(4), 439- 447.

While I’m sure companies are already hard at work devising a way to extract usable information from Facebook, these authors present an academic approach to studying this data-rich platform. However, due to the variable nature of comments, news feeds, and group joining, this process is open to different qualitative interpretation of the same data set, making generalizations of Facebook users’ opinions or behaviors difficult.

It’s times like these, more than ever, I wish there was a distinctive “sarcasm” font to help clarify meaning.

Just finished a round of interviews at Zehnder Communications in New Orleans asking the team about social media usage in marketing/communications. It will be interesting to compare the results to earlier research from Big Spaceship , a solely digital agency in Brooklyn.
